Horses are naturally social animals with personalities, attitudes, fears, and moods, and very sensitive to the energy around them.
They will respond appropriately to human interaction, allowing kids to experience a sense of connection and participation.
Horses and kids are seeking the same feelings of trust and connection, and once a child realizes this similarity, he or she is able to form a connection that is uplifting and inspiring.
Horses are able to teach kids about themselves and their interaction with others around them.
There are many reasons why horses are such effective teachers:
Their ability to read emotional and environmental cues, subtle body language, and sensations help kids focus their attention, improve their concentration, maintain self-awareness, and practice being consistent.
Horses assist kids in becoming aware of the effect their emotions and behavior have on others.
Horses also help kids appreciate the positive aspects of being part of a group, such as family, friends, and classmates.
Horses are great teachers of determination and focus. Kids learn that in order to accomplish tasks and have a relationship with a horse, they have to be motivated and persistent.
Working with horses teaches kids to understand others by learning non-verbal language, empathy and creative ways of communication.
Kids learn to collaborate with others and their horse in order to accomplish tasks. These are the people skills that allow us to understand, share and “play well” with others, including the language, empathy, listening, and social-emotional skills necessary for effective communication, collaboration and teamwork.
Self-motivation and drive define these critically important skills, including a can-do attitude, conscientiousness, determination, gumption, persistence, perseverance, and focus put into action.
Kids quickly realize that in order to accomplish tasks with their horse is not always easy. They develop resilience and agility to ‘get back on the saddle’ any time something didn’t come out the way the expected. Skills that allow for, build and foster agility, adaptability, resilience, and confer the ability to face, overcome, and learn from failure.
